do all kind of silly tests, which ends up giving me a lot of false positive tests/false negative tests!!!!!!!!!!! and im like sweating and starving like hell, (no time for lunch) cursing and swearing non-stop. what the hell! i have absolutely no idea why, might be contaminants/impurities or i didnt even extract the compound properly last week, whatever! so i have to resort to guesswork and elimination, im like, bugging the profs every 10 mins to check the possible functional groups present. and for my neutral unknown, i spent at least an hour plus, deducing the possible structures, flipping through the catalog which contains thousands and thousands of chemical compounds, trying to find one that has a methyl ketone, one alkene, 6 carbons with the correct boiling point. omg. then at 5.30pm, i finally came across this tb, which contains a compound that i suspect might be it, it's my last hope already, i have exhausted almost all the possible structures i can think of. and OMG i got it correct!! i heart this book! it's my saviour, if not for this book, i can spend the entire night in the lab and get nowhere close to the ans. 4-methylpent-3-en-2-one. even the name itself is quite a mouthful. it's common name is mesityl oxide, and since i was looking for names ending with -one specfically, that's why i cannot find it inside the catalog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what the hell! waste my time! but at least i finally know what are my unknowns, thank goodness, i can make my derivatives next week. yay! :D im like, super braindead right now, guessing the unknowns killed most of my braincells. but i have to try to stay awake tonight, got to study for a retrosynthetic test this fri, argh irritating! oh nvm, later there's grey's anatomy, hopefully it can keep me awake through the night. mark sloan! :D |
